A Christmas Message from Ian

Last weekend we attended the Festival of the Nativities put on by our church (local members from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints). We were having a down day and almost didn't feel like making the 20 minute drive out there. I'm so glad we went for this one moment:

Ian pointed at baby Jesus and said, "wooooow, baby!" It was funny and cute, but it also really touched my heart. Ian taught me with such simplicity that we should be wowed by Jesus and his birth. He is the only begotten son of the Father. He was born on this earth in humble circumstances. He taught his gospel and then did what He promised us He would do. He took our sins upon himself and suffered the penalty for them. He bled from every pore. He died for us. Because of his Atonement we can return to our Father in Heaven one day. I can be with my family forever. That is a message of joy. That is a definite reason to say "wow."

I was also touched by how many countries were represented by nativities. There are people all over the world united at this time in gratitude and love for the Savior. What a beautiful time of the year!

Here are a couple of nativities from countries that are close to my heart:

We hope you have a wonderful Christmas and feel of the Savior's love for you.

Life Lately

We have been in Charlotte for 4 months already! What a place. The weather has been pretty amazing, though I am looking forward to the cooler temperatures of Fall mostly because I love sweaters and yummy soups. We also have an amazing ward and are making some great friends. Though we can't always make it, weekly play group is so fun! Everyone is invited and we usually have a pretty good group. I love to watch Ian interact with other kids and it is great to have some grow up time too.

Ben is really enjoying his job. The people he works for are hard workers and have a lot of integrity. He also appreciates that they balance work and family life well--his hours have been very reasonable for a residency. For that I am so very grateful!

Mr. Ian is getting so big! He finally had his one year check up and still measures in the 90th percentile (Ben is so proud). He weighs 21.5 lbs (25th percentile). He's a skinny kid. In fact today I dressed him in some cool orange shorts that should fit, but they kept falling down so he just kept taking them off.

His comprehension is growing daily. He amazes me every day with what he understands. Some of the favorites right now are hold my hand, put that in the trash, get a book, close the door, blow a kiss, let's go outside, open the curtains, get the scriptures, let's pray, let's brush your teeth. It is so fun to watch him get excited as he understands and do whatever it is. I LOVE this stage.

He also started walking last weekend! He had been taking a step or two for a while, but all of sudden he took 10 steps! He now walks sometimes, shorter distances, but crawling is still faster and the preferred mode of travel. We get such a thrill at watching him walk. It's embarrassing to let people watch the videos because we are so excited.

Ian is very excited to meet his new cousin Connor Stewart. We hope we can meet him soon. Congratulations to Ali and Brandon, so glad everything went well! Love you!

We take many walks like this around the apartment complex to check the mail and take out the trash

Showing Ian a butterfly

Exploring at the park. I cringed as he got dirty...I'll work on it.

He loves playing in the cupboards

Playgroup friends are the best!

He pulled his plate right off the table while I went to grab his tray from the kitchen. It was one of those moments when I just had to laugh to keep from being upset.

The park is getting way more fun these days!

Christmas Time in London

Christmas time oh Christmas time! My favorite time of the year (I know, this post is late)! Right after Ben's finals we hopped on a plane a flew to London to enjoy three weeks with the Tingeys at their flat in London. We were so pleased that Ian slept for over half the flight. Thank goodness for bassinets at the bulk head during international flights! Dad picked us up at the airport and we arrived in the late morning. Ben, Ian, and I crashed for a few hours before going out to explore.

Abby had already arrived and Ali and Brandon arrived a couple of days after us. Mom and Dad, or should I say Grandma and Grandpa, enjoyed every minute with Ian. They are such fun grandparents and Ian took to them so easily. They got lots of smiles and giggles. Grandma tickled and kissed. Grandpa also tickled and kissed and dragged Ian around the flat on a blanket. Aunts and uncles are the best! Ian had so much fun!

It was nice to have a good chunk of time together. We went out to explore, but also had a couple of days to stay in pajamas all day while watching movies and eating yummy food. Here are some pictures of our adventures:

 Touring the Harry Potter Set--AMAZING!!

 The Great Hall

The Potions Room

We put on robes and "flew" on brooms. Ian flew with Ben, unfortunately we couldn't take pictures.

Butter beer is tasty!

Six Months

We have survived 6 months of parenthood! It's funny how quickly the time has gone, yet it feels like we have had him forever. Our little Ian is not so little anymore. Ben is particularly proud to say that Ian is in the 90th percentile for height and 50th for weight. He is turning into a very active little boy. We love being his parents and seeing his sweet smile. We live to make him laugh. Hearing those giggles makes our hearts swell with pride and joy. What a blessing he has been to our lives.

Ian still has very blue eyes and his hair is really starting to grow now!

He is eating solids like a champ. Loves his oatmeal and green beans are a hit.

He is getting his second front bottom tooth and is far less irritable with this one!

He has a "Storm Trooper" band that he has been wearing for the past month to help with some flattening on the back of his head. Good news: he gets it off this Tuesday after just 4 weeks of wear. Momma is very excited to be done with it, but grateful it did its job.

He smiles very generously to all and still doesn't mind being held by strangers.

He loves toys that make noise and that he can chew on.

He loves jumping in his new doorway jumper.

He loves to read/chew on books.

Funny noises make him laugh.

He squeals A LOT.

He loves to pull hair...particularly Momma's, but he does not discriminate, any hair will do.

He still blows out regularly, especially at church for some reason.

He can sit up by himself for short periods, but is getting better at it every day.

He still hates tummy time. Every time I put him on his tummy he flips right over and gives me a big smile. Sometimes he forgets that he can roll over and gets angry.

He still loves being on the changing table. In fact, that's where we get the most giggles!

He has a sweet demeanor and shares his love in many ways. We couldn't be happier! Here are a few pictures of our boy as he has grown:

Happy half birthday little guy! We love you!

Ian's Arrival

Today is Ian's due date and he has already been with us for 10 days! I can't believe he is already 10 days old. Some of it has been a blur for me as I have been running on very little sleep. Today I feel the most rested and figured it was a good time to type up his birth story.

I'll go back to Tuesday, July 31st. We had a doctor's appointment and I was already 2-3 centimeters dilated and 90% effaced. Ben and I got so excited and thought for sure Ian was coming that day or within the next few days. We went to Costco to buy baby wipes (the last thing on our list) and bought a sweet little outfit to bring Ian home in. At the end of the day we looked at each other and were disappointed that I hadn't gone into labor yet. Little did we know it was right around the corner.

On Sunday, August 5th I began having contractions, but they weren't very intense (not painful at all) and they were 10 to 15 minutes apart. Monday they continued and Tuesday we had another doctor's appointment. I was dilated to 4 centimeters and still 90% effaced. I was amazed that I was progressing so much without feeling it. The doctor said he would be very surprised if I made it to my appointment for the following week. The contractions started to intensify just a bit and when I walked around they were getting closer, 5 minutes apart and then 3 minutes apart. I called the doctor and he said to go to the hospital. Uncle Steve and Aunt Mary took this picture for us as we left.

As Ben likes to say, "we got kicked out" of the hospital that night. As soon as they had me lay down, my contractions almost stopped. I was still dilated to 4 centimeters and was told, "you don't look like a woman in labor." So we went home at about 1am. That night I woke up with intense pain in my lower back that would come about every 10 minutes. At that point I thought, "Oh, this is what a contraction feels like." I didn't sleep that night.

Wednesday morning Ben and I decided that it was probably time to start moving our things to the townhouse (we were living for the summer with our Aunt and Uncle and were planning to move that Saturday). I packed things up in our room and Ben and our friend Jay transported them to our new home. My contractions kept coming about every 10 minutes. Later in the afternoon Ben and I went for a walk. I had to stop for the contractions and sweet Ben breathed with me so I could get through them. I thought I might be leaking amniotic fluid and was feeling a lot of pressure--so we decided to call the doctor around 5pm. The on-call doctor said it sounded like my body was ready to have the baby and that we should come in. I was nervous because my contractions were still so far apart and thought we were going to drive out there just to be sent home again. So we took our time preparing to go to the hospital.

On the way to the hospital Ben gave me some advice to "not be so chipper" this time when we got to the hospital. (Ben's note: Jackie is such a happy, kind person. When we checked in the night before the nurses asked, "Are you here for an induction?" Jackie responded with a big smile, "Nope! I'm in labor!" "Oh . . . this must be your first time, right?" I doubt there are many women in existence who can smile that big while in labor. This time, we didn't want to get kicked out again, so I thought we needed to be more convincing with the pain. Clearly it worked!) That was not a problem. I was having a contraction as we checked in. The contractions had been wearing on me all day and I was super emotional! Everything made me cry. They took us to a triage room but as I was changing the nurse spoke to the doctor and was told to take me directly to a labor and delivery room. My doctor came in and said that I was admitted. I was then checked and was already dilated to 7 centimeters and I had been leaking fluid. Everything sped up at this point. It was a surreal moment when we were told that our baby would be coming that night!

My contractions got closer together (every 1 to 2 minutes) and my nurse was flying around trying to get everything done so I could get the epidural. I was getting nervous that I wasn't going to get it in time. At about 10pm I finally got the epidural and felt SO much better. That stuff works like magic. Here is a picture after getting it:

Ben's note: See! All smiles!

We turned on the Olympics and rested for a bit. My Mom arrived at about midnight with Ben's Aunt Holly and his sister Abby, they picked her up at the airport. I had a hard time progressing from an 8 and so they gave me Pitocin to intensify my contractions. My blood pressure kept dropping, but I was feeling fine. Then I began to feel the contractions again on my left side. By this time I had a new nurse and she asked me if I had been pushing the button. I asked, "What button???" Apparently there is a button I could have been pushing to give myself more medication, but I was never told about it! So I was given a shot of it so that it would work quickly.

I could feel when I was fully dilated and felt ready to push. I pushed through about 5 contractions. Ben held my legs and counted for me. About halfway through the fifth contraction, all of a sudden I felt a small warm squirmy body on my chest. Ian cried right away for about a minute and then was calm and peaceful for the new 3 or 4 hours. I cried too. He was born Thursday, August 9th at 3:38 AM. He weighed 7 lbs and 1 oz and measured 20 inches.

Ben was such a great support throughout the entire process. He encouraged me, fed me ice chips, cheered me on, and loved me every step of the way. He is very grateful that he did not feel sick or squeamish at all. I am also grateful for that!

Ben and I still can't quite believe that Ian is really ours. He is practically perfect in every way and we love him so much! Here are a few pictures:

We are now home enjoying life with the little guy. My mom has been here helping and Ben's mom is here for a few days before she takes Abby to school at BYU. Ian is very loved! More pictures to come.

30 Weeks Pregnant

I am long overdue for a pregnancy post. I honestly can't believe that we are already into the third trimester! I think that being in school helped time go by quickly. Now that I am done I have thrown myself into baby mode.

I love being pregnant. Sure, the first trimester wasn't always loads of fun, but at least I felt like being sick had a purpose. Now I feel our little boy moving around all the time. And that is my favorite part.

Ian (we are 99% certain that will be his name) is a very active baby. Fun things at this stage include

- He sometimes responds to our voices

- Other times we play a game where we push on a part of my stomach and he pushes back

- It is so fun/weird to see my stomach morph as he makes big movements

- He also has been getting hiccups everyday

- When I lay on my right side at night he throws lots of punches to let me know I am taking some of his space. Once I switch sides he calms down (we learned today that his hands and feet are on that side). He might become a boxer.

Today we had a doctor's appointment. The doctor felt Ian and told us exactly where his head, back, and bum were. He is in breech position right now but babies usually don't get into position until 36 weeks--so we still have time for him to move on his own. He is a mover and a shaker so I don't think that will be a problem.

Ben and I love our little baby more everyday as we talk about him, pray for him, and feel him move. He has taken over my thoughts. We can't wait to meet him.

I hope the summer isn't too hot. June has been nice so far. August can't come soon enough!

Here's a picture for you:
